It was the start of Term 2 for my school after one-week break.
Lessons were suspended with an external trainer for each class to provide lessons to raise greater awareness of limited food supply as well as healthy food diet.
Most of my students were not engaged by the trainer.
The trainer for my class already started telling the teachers that come in to maintain discipline that this was his first experience in teaching.
I guess it was hard for him especially from my past article, you would have known that I am handling very difficult students this year.
Most students like teachers who can joke and be lively. They were disengaged especially the trainer was sharing information that they did not understand.
A small group of students were also talking loudly without listening to the trainer throughout his presentation.
I guess it was not a pleasant experience for a first timer.
I had a few students started to talk loudly due to an argument over a certain issue.
I took out about six of them and left them in another room to settle their conflict and discussion while I walked out of the room to monitor the main group of students.
The argument was about a boy who scolded a parent from another class as prostitute.
The group of students were angry with the boy who had made such impolite comment two days ago during the school holidays.
They brought in issue that was not related to the lesson because they were not interested about the topic that was being shared at all.
There was a drama with a few students giving a lecture to the boy.
The trainer had an easier time handling the better-behaved students with those few difficult ones taken out.
Are they the unruly ones?
Since my students are from complicated family backgrounds, regular talks did not work very well with them.
Learning is not really their interest and they are in school to mingle and make friends.
Teachers are really their obstacle to fun and freedom especially when we need them to sit and listen to our lessons.
Instead of going against them, we can go with their flow and see what they like to get them interested in learning.
Instead of changing such a large group of students, teachers may just want to change the way we teach to suit their learning needs.
My students indeed do not like to study but teachers should not give up in teaching them.
When everyone gives up on them, they may never be able to see the turning point in their lives.
They need to see a better world when they can have the determination to face the world with an enriched mind through education.
I do agree that education does not ensure a successful future but it can open up to more opportunities for future survival in a competitive world.
